Welcome to Frugal Trophy Wife
A Blog about – My Life, Kids, Couponing, Crafts, Fitness, Recipes and more………………
I started using coupons in 2010. My intention wasn’t to use coupons but I somehow stumbled onto the “coupon world” while browsing “work from home jobs” the same night i found out I was pregnant with my first child. I was 22 years old, still living with my parents, attending my 3rd year at a community college and working for minimum wage for a rental company. I had no car, no savings, nothing… I had nothing. I sat down and thought …How is this going to work? I need to find a job! Wait, I need to find a job where I can work from home! I started searching online for job opportunities and this is where it all started.
I came across a blog post about couponing and it was all over from there!!! I was hooked …hooked on reading about how to coupon, how to get money back, how to get free products, how to match weekly store deals with manufacturer and store coupons to GET MONEY BACK (overage)!!! After days of researching I got myself a huge binder, I subscribed to 10 newspaper subscriptions, signed up on different coupon websites, printed coupons, clipped coupons, planned my shopping trips and I became an extreme couponer within a month! I learned all the ins and outs of couponing extremely fast, I was addicted, addicted to getting free products and saving my family and friends money!
I paid almost nothing for formula, wipes, diapers, groceries, frozen foods, make-up, health and beauty products, vitamins, laundry care, cleaning supplies, and the list goes on. I was getting products I didn’t even need because it was “free” or it was “making me money” to buy those items. For Example …
Publix has Maybelline eyeliner on sale for $2.49 (I would use the following coupons below to get “overage”)
– use 1 Manufacturer Coupon for $1.50 off any eyeliner (Printable Coupon)
– use 1 Publix Store Coupon for $2.00 off Any Maybelline Product from the Publix Green Advantage Flyer
Ok let’s calculate this now $2.49 – $1.50 – $2.00 = FREE PRODUCT + $1.01 in “overage”
Did i lose you? Are you confused? When I first started I was confused to, I was like… They give you the product for free plus money? what? No, this isn’t real? Is it?
But, there is a small catch to overage, Publix doesn’t actually give you cash back, they give you the overage amount on a Publix gift card, which in my eyes counts as “cash” for me. If you are purchasing other items in the same shopping trip, the “overage” amount goes towards the total cost of your purchase but i will get into more detail about extreme couponing in another post.
Now, did i get your attention? I considered myself an extreme couponer but I didn’t get every deal out there and I only shopped at a few stores Target, Publix, CVS and Walgreens. Within a few months I had enough products (stockpile) to last my family for over a year. I slowed down on couponing in 2014 when my 2nd child was born and then I stopped couponing in 2015 when I just couldn’t find the time to coupon anymore. I would use a few coupons here and there for groceries but I still had stockpiles of items that lasted me until summer of 2017 and If something was free or extremely cheap and it involved “minimum” work i would buy the product so i never really ran out of an item …UNTIL Sept., Oct. and Nov. (2017) came around and one by one I was running out of laundry detergent, toothpaste, soap, body wash, shampoo, toilet paper, paper towels, paper plates, you name it!
It was extremely hard for me to go to the store and pickup an item for FULL PRICE …FULL PRICE!!!! Do you know how much money I had to spend every week just to buy necessities? I am a WAHM who works part-time a few hours a day, it’s very hard especially around the holidays. In November, 2017 I started doing small couponing deals again, purchasing a lot of “glitch” and “Clearance” products online and in-store, bought over 60+ Christmas gifts for under $250 and got back over $500 in cash back, store credits and referral credits. I also got over $2,000 in merchandise from Victoria Secrets, Kohls, Amazon and Walmart for under $300. Seeing all these items I got and knowing how much I spent was all the motivation I needed to start couponing again …..we are now currently in 2019 and i’m still couponing!!!!!!
I created this website so others can follow my journey in life and also save money! Let’s make 2019 a great year to save! Who’s joining me? Comment below with any questions you may have and don’t forget to share my blog with your friends and family 🙂
